Emma Stone is riding high following her Oscar win for Best Actress this year, and now the La La Land star should be in even more demand than usual. She already has a couple of projects lined up, including tennis film Battle of the Sexes and a live-action movie revolving around 101 Dalmatians villain Cruella de Vil, but these days it seems like acclaimed thespians are looking to land a major franchise role. Stone’s fellow Oscar winner Brie Larson will play Captain Marvel in the MCU, and Jared Leto followed up his own Academy Award winning performance with a turn as Suicide Squad’s Joker.
Stone has already been part of a studio tentpole, playing Gwen Stacy in the now-defunct Amazing Spider-Man series, but that wouldn’t stop her from taking on another franchise if she so chooses. The DCEU, while getting off to a rocky start critically speaking, has done a very good job casting several fan-favorite characters. Warner Bros. doesn’t skimp in that department, and many would like to see Stone portray Barbara Gordon/Batgirl in one of the films. Now, some fan art of the actress in character has emerged.
BossLogic took to Twitter to share his latest pieces, depicting Barbara as a fiery redhead in her costume. There are two versions; one without a cowl and one with Stone wearing the mask. You can check them out below:
As several moviegoers know by now, the DCEU has many films in various states of development as WB looks to retool the slate they initially confirmed a few years back. Some of them could be a good spot to introduce Batgirl. There’s a possibility the Harley Quinn-led Gotham City Sirens brings the Birds of Prey into the fold, or Barbara could appear in the recently announced Nightwing. Of course, Batgirl could also be one of the leads in a Birds of Prey movie, which is reportedly being written by Bumblebee spinoff scribe Christina Hodson. This is all to say, it wouldn’t be surprising if the DCEU creative team looked to cast Barbara Gordon for an upcoming movie, and the multi-talented Stone would be a great pick-up.
Emma Stone - Batgirl, even tho I want her to play this I would still love for her to be in the marvel universe with @brielarson :D pic.twitter.com/UuJeKNHwIq— BossLogic (@Bosslogic) February 28, 2017
However, there’s a distinct chance this ends up being nothing but fans’ dreams. As stated earlier, Stone had one go-around with big-budget blockbusters, and has now carved out a niche as a critical darling with standout performances in Birdman and La La Land. She, like former co-star Andrew Garfield, could decide that the Hollywood machine isn’t right for her and look to leave her mark with smaller films that dominate the awards circuit instead of the box office. Time will tell, but whichever route Stone takes, it’s safe to say her future is looking bright.
