TikTok has been the subject of many issues and complaints lately with the most recent one being how the app was unable to host the BTS “ARMY” when a clip of the band’s latest song from the “Map of the Soul: 7” album dropped. While it’s possible fans of the popular South Korean band might be able to bring down TikTok, here’s what really happened.
If a band was potentially able to break TikTok, then it could very well be BTS. After all, the band’s following (which often refers to itself as the “ARMY”) are more than active on the short-clip video platform - just like they are elsewhere on social media. For example, BTS only arrived on TikTok back in September of last year and the official account already has well over 8 million followers and more than 40 million likes. Furthermore, following the event, many of the followers did take credit on social media for what happened, with some pointing to this as ‘business as usual’ for BTS.
In spite of the claims, and the possibility that the BTS ARMY is substantial enough to overwhelm apps and websites, that’s not what happened, according to TikTok. Instead, the issue now appears to have been the result of something far more mundane like a broken link. In fact, according to The Verge, that’s exactly what happened with the wrong URL link for the track having been used, and once the link was updated to point to the correct location a normal TikTok service resumed.
The Latest TikTok Issue Better Than Others
While this is only the latest issue to affect TikTok, it is certainly a more entertaining one considering the service has repeatedly come under increased scrutiny in recent months. There’s been claims the service has a drug problem, that it responded to a teen’s suicide inappropriately, and that some of its viral challenges are now getting so serious they are resulting in injury to unsuspecting people. Therefore, even though this has led to many believing the service was unable to handle user load at the time, it is bound to be a more welcomed problem than some of the others.
As for BTS, irrespective of whether the ARMY brought down the TikTok app, the band’s clip is doing extremely well on the platform. More than 116 thousand videos have already been uploaded in relation to the clip, and the corresponding #ONchallenge hashtag has so far generated more than 155 million collective views. Needless to say, the decision to release the “ON” clip through the micro-video platform has proven to be a good one for both BTS and TikTok - irrespective of the technical issue.
