Annabelle Comes Home is the latest installment in the Conjuring franchise, but how much did it cost to make? Kicking off with the original Conjuring film in 2013, the property quickly evolved into a full-blown shared universe with mainline sequels and numerous spinoffs. Annabelle has become a series in its own right, with Creation marking the third standalone for the creepy doll. The previous two films were very successful at the box office, totaling $563.6 million at the worldwide box office.
One of the primary reasons horror has become such a go-to genre for the studios in recent years is because of the low risk involved. These films cost peanuts to make (especially when compared to major tentpoles), meaning they can make their costs back in no time at all. Even the horror films that don’t crossover and become substantial hits turn a profit because their budgets are very low. That’s been true throughout the Conjuring franchise, and the trend continues with the next Annabelle.
Unfortunately, no official Annabelle Creation budget figure has been listed, so we have to look at the other Conjuring spinoffs to establish a ballpark figure. Here they are:
- Annabelle: $6.5 million The Curse of La Llorona: $9 million Annabelle: Creation: $15 million The Nun: $22 million
With this in mind, a fair range for Annabelle Creation would be $20-25 million. In all likelihood, it will ultimately cost more than the previous Annabelle movies because of Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga’s involvement. Not that their salaries will make the Creation budget unmanageable, but bringing in the property’s two biggest stars will increase the costs somewhat. One also has to factor in the popularity of the Annabelle sub-franchise, as Creation seems like it is a lock commercially. That gives Warner Bros. confidence to raise the budget. Annabelle is no longer an untested spinoff where caution is key (which explains the extremely low cost for the first one). People are probably going to show up for this one, though franchises have had a rough go at it this summer so far.
In all likelihood, Annabelle Creation will be a very profitable endeavor. Not only was the budget low, it gets a jump start on the competition, opening ahead of other horror movies like Midsommar and Crawl. There should be a sizable demand for another Annabelle, especially since it’s been about a month since there was a new mainstream horror film on the market (Ma). It’s true Child’s Play came out this past weekend, but that was more of a niche outing. None of the Chucky movies were as big of hits as the Annabelle films, so it’s clear Annabelle is the creepy doll of choice for general audiences.
